International watch: Full list of Barcelona players called up for national team duty
With a month completed in the new La Liga season, teams will now get a breather for the first international break of the 2023/24 campaign.
Barcelona go into the break with a hard-fought 2-1 win over CA Osasuna on Sunday night, which puts them in third place in the La Liga table, two points behind league leaders and arch-rivals Real Madrid.
Most teams in Europe will be playing in the UEFA Euro 2020 Qualifiers over the coming week whereas South American sides will be involved in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers while some teams will play friendly fixtures.
And, as many as 12 players from Barcelona have been called up to represent their national team during the course of the current international break.
Lamine Yamal could make history
Kicking off with the Spanish national team, three Barcelona players have made the cut to manager Luis de la Fuente’s squad list for their matches against Cyprus and Georgia.
The highlight of the selection is 16-year-old wonderkid Lamine Yamal, who has earned his first-ever call up with La Roja and could very well become the youngest player to represent the national team ever should he make his debut.
Apart from Yamal, Gavi and Alejandro Balde are also part of the Spain squad, but there is no space for Ferran Torres while Pedri misses out with injury.
Nine other Barcelona players called up
The list comprises Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Ilkay Gundogan who will be a part of the Germany squad who are scheduled to face Japan and France in friendly encounters.
Meanwhile, defensive mainstay Andreas Christensen will be on call to play for Denmark in their Euro Qualifiers against San Marino and Finland over the coming week.
Christensen’s centre-back partner, Jules Kounde, will be with the French national team who face the Republic of Ireland in the Euro Qualifiers before battling Germany in a friendly.
Frenkie de Jong, meanwhile, will be part of former Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad. The Dutch are to take on Greece and Ireland in the Euro 2024 Qualifiers.
Robert Lewandowski will be leading the Poland national team against Faroe Islands and Albania in the Euro qualifying fixtures.
Deadline day signings Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo will be a part of the Portugal squad for the next week, as they take on Slovakia and Luxembourg over the coming week or so.
Raphinha earned a late call-up to the Brazilian national team, as a replacement for the injured Vinicius Jr.
