Barcelona are set to receive a significant compensation package from UEFA following Pedri’s injury that rules the midfielder out of the tournament.
The playmaker went over Kroos’ outstretched leg in the eighth minute of Spain’s dramatic victory against Euro 2024 hosts Germany. The Barcelona midfielder was forced off and left the pitch in tears, likelyknowing his tournament was over. Pedri will not play again for Spain this tournament but will stay with the squad to continue his recovery from yet another injury. Having sustained the injury on international duty, Barcelona may be entitled to compensation.
Sport.es report that Barcelona may be granted compensation should Pedri’s injury be serious. The outlet notes that under the FIFA club protection programme rules, UEFA will have to pay Barcelona €20,548 (£17,390/$22,000) for every day that Pedri is injured beyond one month. With Pedri expected to be out of action for at least a month-and-a-half, Barcelona may earn a fair compensation package.
Despite his injury, Pedri did not miss out on the Spanish celebrations after reaching yet another European Championship semi-final. The midfielder was seen amongst the squad members after the game cheering on one another as they await a clash with France on Tuesday.
His time on the pitch may be over, but Pedri will not let that dampen his desire to be part of a successful European Championship side. If Spain beat France, and then win the final, the midfielder will be eligible for a winner’s medal and his important role in their impressive group stage won’t be forgotten.
