Amid all the talk surrounding Barcelona’s move to sign Robert Lewandowski, Diario SPORT has published a report on the club’s pursuit of a new midfielder.
Even though Franck Kessie is expected to join the club on a free transfer, Barça are looking for another midfielder who can replace Sergio Busquets in the years to come.
Aurelien Tchouameni has emerged as the transfer priority for Barcelona. It appears Xavi rates the AS Monaco youngster highly due to his technical prowess, skill and physique that should make him an ideal cog in the midfield unit.
At the age of just 22, Tchouameni has considerable room to develop into one of the best midfielders in the world and could be Barcelona’s answer to Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga.
The report suggests Barcelona have come in contact with Tchouameni’s agent, seeking the possibility of a summer move to Camp Nou. The midfielder has been strongly linked to Madrid in recent past and prefers a move to Spain as the next step in his future.
The Catalans have been tracking the 22-year-old’s progress for a long time now. They were interested in the midfielder in the past but were bogged down by Monaco’s hefty demands.
But it appears the tables have turned, with Barcelona now increasingly entertaining the idea of signing Tchouameni in the summer transfer window. The player himself is keen on joining a Spanish club, having already rejected the advances of Paris Saint-Germain.
Monaco are currently looking for a fee of €60 million for the services of their midfield asset. With Barcelona currently poised to make an official bid for Lewandowski, the negotiations could be delayed.
But the Blaugrana are hopeful of initiating the operation to sign Tchouameni in the near future, although the fate of their pursuit could depend heavily on sponsorship deals, the sale of Barça Stadio and various player sales.
