Xavi will prioritise England top rated Defender over Spanish left-back for Barcelona
Marcos Alonso has recently been in the headlines in the Barça Twittersphere. The Spanish International has been spoken of as an addition to the left-back role, which is worryingly lacking in depth.
Naturally, he would be a key point of interest for Xavi Hernandez and his management team. However, another player from Chelsea is of a more immediate need to him.
According to Javi Miguel, Barcelona will focus more of their efforts on consolidating the signing of Cezar Azpilicueta before going in for Alonso. The signing of the Spaniard is more critical to Xavi’s project.
Azpilicueta is a legend for Chelsea and is even in his 30s, one of the core players in Thomas Tuchel’s team. He stands out for his passing ability, decision making in crucial moments in the defence, and leadership.
With his contract soon running its course, he is set to sign for Barcelona on a free deal. Azpilicueta will gain from the fact that he will be leading the heart of Barcelona’s defence alongside Gerard Pique and Ronald Araujo.
Barcelona would benefit from the financial and sporting incentives brought about by having him.
He will join on a free deal, which is heaven-sent for a club in financial difficulty. Furthermore, he will join the club on a relatively low salary, which should not be problematic for Barça.
Sportingly, Barça gain an experienced leader in the defence and someone to add depth to the team. The mostly rely on just two centre-backs, Pique and Araujo, with the rest either too young or with less than optimal quality.
Azpilicueta adds tactical dynamism while enriching the team’s depth as well.
Alonso is not out of the picture, as Barcelona will still have an eye out for him. He will only be signed once Barça have completed their acquisition of Azpilicueta this summer.
